The Conejo Jewish Day School – Academics

Rabbi Eli Broner
School Rabbi and Principal

Esther Markel
Incoming Director of Jewish Studies

Dr. Debora Parks
Director of General Studies and School Operations

Our rigorous dual curriculum is aligned with the California standards, and uniquely integrates Judaic and Core subjects through project-based learning and differentiated instruction. The result is a curriculum whose richness, relevance, and depth is unlike any other Jewish Day School.

The school's Judaic curriculum is grounded in traditional Torah study with Hebrew language in original texts, affording each and every student the opportunity to embrace Jewish values in their own way and to learn to see the Torah as a blueprint for life. Our Judaic teachers embody the essence of traditional Jewish life and exude passion, joy, and creativity in learning.

Our General Studies program borrows from the depth and the richness of the historical and traditional discipline of Torah study to enhance the relevance of core subjects such as Language Arts, Math, Social Science, History, and Science. Critical and creative thinking, along with problem solving and perspective taking are cornerstones of the General Education curriculum. We engage students in community projects that extend and deepen the learning they do in school.

We utilize diverse and creative assessment strategies that go well beyond "testing" and enable students to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways, including performance- and presentation-based assessment. At all grade levels students are engaged actively in a collaborative process of academic goal setting, and are guided in the process of reflection and self-assessment. Portfolio assessment and student-led parent conferences are some of the ways that we engage students as active participants and the self-directed leaders in the educational process. Our classrooms are based on the principles of compassion, in which each student is valued for the unique contribution they make to the class. Exceptional student-teacher ratios allow each student to receive highly personalized attention and individualized instruction.

Every teacher, administrator, and staff person at CJDS strives to model, in our daily lives, the values that we teach - chesed (kindness), ahavat Yisrael (love of all mankind), and tikkun olam (healing the world).
